What Is a Good Instagram Engagement Rate for a Dubai Business in 2026?

What Is a Good Instagram Engagement Rate for a Dubai Business in 2026?

For a Dubai business account under 10,000 followers, a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026 is 2 to 6% when you measure it against reach, and anything above 1% when you measure it against total followers. Instagram's platform-wide average has fallen to roughly 0.45%, down about 24% year on year, so the benchmark most people are still quoting from a few years ago is simply out of date.

I get asked this constantly, usually by a business owner who has seen a number in their insights and has no idea whether to be pleased or worried. The honest answer is that the number on its own means nothing until you know which formula produced it.

There are two formulas, and they give wildly different answers

This is where most of the confusion starts. Engagement rate is calculated one of two ways.

Engagement rate by followers takes likes, comments, saves and shares, divides by your follower count, and multiplies by 100. This is the figure every industry benchmark report uses, because follower counts are public and reach is not. It is also the figure that punishes you for every dormant follower you have ever collected.

Engagement rate by reach takes the same interactions and divides by the number of accounts that actually saw the post. This is the figure inside your own Instagram insights, and it is the more useful one, because it answers a real question: of the people who saw this, how many cared?

The same post can be 0.9% by followers and 4.5% by reach. Neither is wrong. If you compare your reach-based number to a benchmark built on followers, you will think you are a genius. Do it the other way round and you will think you are failing. Always check which formula you are looking at.

The 2026 benchmarks, in plain numbers

Here is where things actually stand this year, using engagement per follower unless stated otherwise.

  • Instagram platform average: about 0.45%. That is down from roughly 0.52% in early 2025, a fall of around 24% in twelve months.
  • Carousels: around 0.55%. Still the best performing format for engagement, because a swipe is itself a signal.
  • Reels: around 0.50%. Lower on engagement than carousels but far higher on reach, which is why Reels remain the discovery tool.
  • Single images: around 0.35%, down roughly 17% year on year. The static grid post is fading fast.
  • Accounts under 10,000 followers: commonly 2 to 6% when measured against reach. Small accounts genuinely do engage better, because their audience is mostly people who chose them rather than people the algorithm handed them.
  • Accounts over 500,000 followers: 1 to 3%. Engagement rate falls as follower count rises, every single time.

A useful rule of thumb: if you run a small business account and you are consistently hitting 3% against reach, you are doing better than most of your competitors in Dubai.

Why the whole platform is falling

Your engagement rate probably dropped this year. So did nearly everyone's. Instagram now fills the feed with recommended content from accounts people do not follow, which means your posts reach a larger, colder audience. More impressions from strangers, spread across the same number of likes, mathematically drags the percentage down.

That is not a failure. It is a change in what the denominator represents. If your reach is up 40% and your engagement rate is down 15%, you are winning, and a rate-only view will tell you the opposite.

What this means for a Dubai business specifically

There is no credible UAE-only engagement benchmark published, so use the global numbers as your baseline and then adjust for two local realities.

The first is churn. Dubai has an unusually mobile population, and a follower list built three years ago will contain a lot of people who have since left the country. Those accounts still count in your denominator and will never engage again. This is a big part of why UAE accounts often look slightly below global average on a followers-based calculation while performing perfectly well in reality.

The second is language. Bilingual content consistently outperforms English-only posts for UAE audiences, and if your customer base is genuinely mixed, publishing in one language alone is quietly capping your ceiling. I have written separately about whether to post in Arabic or English in the UAE, and it is worth reading if your engagement has plateaued.

The third thing worth saying plainly: engagement rate is not revenue. I would rather run an account at 1.8% that fills the enquiry inbox than one at 6% that generates nothing but compliments from other people in the industry.

How to actually raise it

If your rate is genuinely low and you want to move it, these five things work reliably.

  • Post more carousels. They are the strongest engagement format and the cheapest to produce well, which is exactly why good graphic design pays for itself here.
  • Ask one specific question. Not "thoughts?" but a question with an obvious, low-effort answer. Comments carry more weight than likes.
  • Optimise for saves and shares. A genuinely useful post gets saved, and saves signal value more strongly than a like ever will.
  • Reply to every comment within the first hour. Your reply is engagement, and early activity tells Instagram the post is worth pushing.
  • Clean up dead weight. If your follower list is full of bought or lapsed accounts, your rate is permanently handicapped. Stop chasing followers and start chasing the right ones.

None of this is complicated. It is just consistent, which is the part most businesses find hard when social media management is the ninth thing on a founder's list.

The metric I would watch instead

If you only track one number, do not make it engagement rate. Track saves and shares per post, and track profile visits to website clicks. Those three tell you whether content is useful and whether it is moving people towards buying. Engagement rate is a health check, not a scoreboard.

Key takeaways

  • Instagram's platform-wide engagement rate is about 0.45% in 2026, down roughly 24% year on year.
  • A good rate for a business under 10,000 followers is 2 to 6% measured against reach.
  • Engagement by followers and engagement by reach are different formulas with very different results, so check which one you are quoting.
  • Carousels lead at about 0.55%, Reels at 0.50%, single images at 0.35% and falling.
  • UAE follower lists go stale faster than most markets, which drags follower-based rates down without meaning much.
  • Saves, shares and profile-to-website clicks are better indicators of whether social media is earning its keep.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026?

For a business account under 10,000 followers, 2 to 6% measured against reach is good and anything above 4% is strong. Measured against total followers instead, Instagram's platform-wide average is about 0.45%, so 1% by that formula is already above average.

How do I calculate my Instagram engagement rate?

Add likes, comments, saves and shares on a post, divide by either your follower count or the post's reach, then multiply by 100. Dividing by reach is the fairer measure because it tells you how the people who actually saw the post responded.

Why has my Instagram engagement rate dropped in 2026?

Almost certainly because the whole platform has dropped. Instagram's average engagement fell from about 0.52% in early 2025 to roughly 0.45% in 2026, a decline of around 24% year on year, largely because reach is spread across a far bigger pool of recommended content.

Is engagement rate different in the UAE compared to global benchmarks?

There is no reliable UAE-only benchmark published, so use the global figures as your baseline. In practice Dubai accounts often sit slightly below global averages on followers because expat audiences move on and follower lists go stale faster than in most markets.

Which Instagram format gets the highest engagement rate?

Carousels lead on engagement per follower at around 0.55%, Reels follow at roughly 0.50%, and single images have fallen about 17% year on year to around 0.35%. Reels still win on reach, so the two formats do different jobs.

If your engagement has slipped and you are not sure whether it is you or the platform, that is usually a content and consistency problem rather than a mystery. See our monthly packages or book a free strategy call and I will take an honest look at your account.
